The Palm city of Jericho is located 10 km north of the Dead Sea, 8 km west of the Jordan, an oasis in the barren landscape. Located 250 meters below sea level, it is the lowest-lying city in the world. Its distance from Jerusalem (750 meters above sea level) is about 25 miles.
The old Canaanite settlement was the key fortress of the Jordan Rift Valley, becouse it controlled all access roads to the mountains. It was a fertile oasis with plenty of water. Due to its sheltered location, the city had an almost tropical climate.
