Quirinius

The Roman general and consul Publius Sulpicius Quirinius became the legate governor of Syria in 11 BC. Until 16 AD he led the eastern part of the roman empire assuming various official positions. The tax estimate began 8 BC in Egypt and Syria, reaching Israel in 7 BC.
